In the advanced SMILE class, students are working on paragraph writing and elements of writing style. Here is an example of a recent paragraph by one of our students.

How the Mighty Empire of Rome Began

Rome’s beginnings can be traced to small settlements of shepherds near the banks of the Tiber River. There were many legends about how Rome began. One myth was about two baby twins, who were heirs to a settlement in Italy. They were named Romulus and Remus. Unfortunately, they were left at the Tiber River, like disposed garbage, by their cruel uncle. Luckily, they were rescued by a wolf, an angel, who brought them to a shepherd where they were raised. The shepherd started a tiny community next to the rapidly flowing Tiber River. Soon, the river helped them become magnificent farmers and great traders. They formed massive armies to protect themselves and invade other places. As they conquered more and more people, the settlements grew.  In 753 BC, when Remus was killed in a fight, Romulus became king of the settlement.  The expanding city was named Rome after Romulus.  Although Rome began as a humble village, it became a mighty empire.  A.P.
