In our outdoor class, students learned the history of Thanksgiving in Canada and why this day became an annual national holiday. Students also made turkeys' tails out of leaves where they had the opportunity to write down what they were thankful for.

Those of us who don’t struggle with reading may be unaware of how much effort it takes some children to learn to read. The Orton-Gillingham approach provides an evidence-based, explicit, and systematic approach to reading instruction. At AcadeCap, our SMILE programme teachers are trained in the Orton-Gillingham technique and can provide personalized support so that students gain confidence while improving their reading, writing, and spelling competencies.
SMILE is our special programme for students who are struggling with reading and writing. During a SMILE class, students work 1:1 or in small groups to review and consolidate reading strategies and spelling rules in an integrated reading-writing format. SMILE teachers support the students using an explicit approach based on the Orton-Gillingham method. Please enjoy a piece of pie featuring vowel team "ie."
As part of the PYP Expo requirements, the Grade 5/6 students prepared TED-ED style talks related to their Expo central themes. Talks included topics ranging from COVID care, the impact of waste on the environment, the effects of advertising on how people think and behave, how the human mind is impacted by sound, how the body works when playing sports, and how gravity differs on Earth and Mars.
Students joined a special club in late March and early April to prepare for Earth Day 2022. The group worked collaboratively to design a calendar to give to others to celebrate Earth Day and take action to help Mother Earth every month of the year. Students engaged in creating a theme for the calendar, creating artwork, making sentences and phrases to accompany each piece of art, and choosing layouts and colour schemes. The calendar will be ready for distribution on April 22nd.
PYP students are honing their debating skills in an engaging lunch time club. Each session starts with a skill building activity to warm up our brains and then moves into a more formal debating activity. Students learn the art of argumentation and reasoning while having fun!
In the advanced SMILE class, students are working on paragraph writing and elements of writing style. Here is an example of a recent paragraph by one of our students. How the Mighty Empire of Rome Began Rome’s beginnings can be traced to small settlements of shepherds near the banks of the Tiber River. There were many legends about how Rome began. One myth was about two baby twins, who were heirs to a settlement in Italy. They were named Romulus and Remus. Unfortunately, they were left at the Tiber River, like disposed garbage, by their cruel uncle. Luckily, they were rescued by a wolf, an angel, who brought them to a shepherd where they were raised. The shepherd started a tiny community next to the rapidly flowing Tiber River. Soon, the river helped them become magnificent farmers and great traders. They formed massive armies to protect themselves and invade other places. As they conquered more and more people, the settlements grew. In 753 BC, when Remus was killed in a fight, Romulus became king of the settlement. The expanding city was named Rome after Romulus. Although Rome began as a humble village, it became a mighty empire. A.P. During the SMILE holiday party, students participated in reading games, wrote word and sentence 'gifts' to give to each other and decorated the windows with holiday messages. Happy Holidays Everyone!
To complement our Orton-Gillingham Based literacy program, AcadeCap has invested in the All About Reading Program resources. All About Reading consists of readers and hands-on activities which can be chosen based on each students’ reading level and interests. The resources provide a colourful and multisensory experience for the SMILE students.
