The SMILE (systematic multisensory literacy education) program provides an opportunity for primary students to work explicitly on foundational skills in reading such as building knowledge of letter-sound correspondences, decoding multisyllabic words, and identifying irregular words.  Students develop their writing skills, including cursive writing, punctuation, grammar, and spelling. The curriculum is adjusted to each student in order to maximize their learning and work on their areas of need.  Therefore, the program provides an excellent supplement to the main language arts curriculum for students who need some extra support with reading and writing.  Here are some examples of student work in progress.
